The first time I heard
That my second grade
Friend
Locked himself inside his locker
To hide
From the voices
In his head
I snuck into the washroom
On my five minute lunch break
And wept.

The first time I heard
That my second grade
Friend

Threatened to commit suicide
Because Jasmine
Wouldn’t play with him
At recess
A light inside
Turned off.

And when I left the fifth graders
Unattended
To silence the beating
On the boy’s bathroom wall
It was no surprise to find him trying to shatter the mirror
With his seven-year old head
Because he didn’t like the face
He had made.

“Sensitivity towards a disorder solves nothing and wastes time.”
“And if he was smart enough to know the voices weren’t real
He should not have been afraid.”

You ask me what I will miss
About the children I could not teach–

Mistaking the devil
For what was God.
